Accounting for Relationships and Community

For Troy Mahlke, strong relationships are at the heart of both a successful business and a thriving community. As a local CPA, business owner, and member of First Federal Bank’s Board of Directors, he has seen how working together can make a difference.
Troy joined the Bank’s board in 2025, but his connection to First Federal began long before. Through his accounting practice, Mahlke Hunsaker & Company, he regularly collaborated with bank employees in order to prepare the necessary financials and tax documents for his clients. First Federal’s responsiveness and professionalism left a lasting impression.
“We would reach out to First Fed all the time, needing various things, and they always got back to us right away and were happy to help,” Troy said. “They made our jobs much easier, taking a lot of the effort and stress out of things.”
Professional Success Through Helping Others Succeed
Troy and his business partner, Scott Hunsaker, started their firm after spending a decade working together at another practice. Over the past 15 years, their business has grown from a small team to a practice with multiple employees and CPAs, growing alongside the Twin Falls community.
Throughout that journey, Troy has valued having dependable partners who share his commitment to helping clients. “In our practice, we truly need everyone to work together to help our clients succeed,” he said.
For Troy, First Federal’s willingness to help with requests and, in many ways, be a partner in the success of his clients, made the bank a valuable extension of his team. That experience, along with his respect for First Fed’s reputation as a community pillar and admiration for the bank’s leadership, made his decision to accept an invitation to serve on the board an easy one. He saw the opportunity as another chance to be part of a team where he could contribute and lead as well as learn – knowledge he could ultimately take back to his own business and clients.
Bringing Accounting Expertise to the Board
Troy’s extensive accounting background brings a valuable perspective to the First Fed boardroom. His practice works on tax returns as well as financial statements and audits for businesses, non-profit organizations, and government entities.
That experience helps him understand the bank’s financial statements, ask informed questions, and provide thoughtful guidance. He also appreciates the different strengths his fellow board members and bank leaders bring to the table.
“When we meet monthly, it’s unbelievable how much knowledge there is there,” Troy said.
Sharing Talents with the Community
Troy’s commitment to teamwork extends beyond his profession. He and his wife, Tami, a long-time educator, became involved in community activities while raising their three sons. Through coaching and teaching, they’ve been able to help mentor youth as well as experience the value of giving someone an opportunity to learn, participate, and be part of a team.
In addition to giving back to the next generation, Troy has been able to share his financial expertise with several local organizations and non-profits, helping them prosper. “When we have talents, we should share them,” Troy said.
Looking Ahead, Together
Outside of work and board service, Troy’s favorite way to spend time is with his family. As his sons have grown, their activities have shaped his and Tami’s interests. He has also started golfing more, though finding ways to spend time together remains the priority.
Looking toward the future, Troy sees opportunity in the Magic Valley’s continued growth. What excites him most about First Federal, however, is the people helping guide it forward.
“They’re great people,” Troy said. “And if you have great people, you’re going to succeed.”
