For Whitney Blakely, Marketing Supervisor at First Federal Bank, summer isn't complete without a weekend getaway to Hagerman. What began as a simple family trip has grown into one of their favorite annual traditions, bringing together multiple generations to enjoy Idaho's natural beauty and spend uninterrupted time together.

Each July, Whitney's family rents an Airbnb with a cozy bunkhouse tucked alongside a peaceful creek. While the destination is less than an hour from home, the sound of running water, towering shade trees, and slower pace make it feel like a true escape.

"We spend most of our time sitting under the trees playing games, catching up, sharing stories, and eating way more snacks than anyone could possibly need," Whitney says. "Everyone helps prepare meals, and we invite extended family and close friends to join us. It's become something we all look forward to every year."

One of the highlights of the weekend is an early morning trip to Ritter Island. To beat the crowds, the family packs up early and launches their kayaks for the scenic loop around the island. Along the way, they stop to skip rocks, enjoy a picnic lunch, cool off in the water, and simply take in the peaceful surroundings.

The adventure doesn't end there. Another favorite stop is Blue Heart Springs, where a 30- to 45-minute paddle leads to one of Idaho's most breathtaking hidden gems. The crystal-clear turquoise water may be cold, but Whitney says it's always worth the trip. The family spends hours swimming, paddleboarding, floating, and enjoying the quiet beauty of the spring.

Over the years, they've also explored Box Canyon Springs, another Hagerman-area treasure known for its vibrant blue water, waterfalls, and scenic canyon views. It's one of Whitney's favorite places to recommend to anyone looking for an unforgettable Idaho adventure.

After long days outdoors, evenings are spent enjoying dinner and live music at Wilson's Club before returning to the Airbnb for more games, laughter, and family time. And of course, no trip is complete without picking up one of Hagerman's famous watermelons before heading home.

While some traditions have stayed the same, others have naturally evolved over the years.

"Our annual trip has changed throughout the years," Whitney says. "It started with many of us as young adults, and now there are little kids, growing families, and new traditions. The schedule may look a little different each year, but the heart of the trip remains the same."

For Whitney, that's what makes Hagerman so special. It's not just about the places they visit, it's about slowing down, reconnecting with the people who matter most, and creating memories that continue to grow with each passing summer.

No matter how much her family changes, Hagerman remains one of Whitney's favorite places to return to, a reminder that some of Idaho's best adventures are the ones shared with the people you love.
