Growing Future Leaders Through Agricultural Education

Agricultural education gives students the opportunity to discover career paths, develop leadership skills, and gain hands-on experience that prepares them for the future. Through support from the First Federal Foundation, students in the Filer FFA program now have access to additional forestry tools and supplies that help make those opportunities possible.

FFA, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, provides students with opportunities to explore a wide range of agricultural industries through classroom instruction, leadership development, and competitive career development events.

“We have 14 teams that compete through all of the sectors of agriculture,” said Jennifer Cummins, FFA and Agriculture Instructor at Filer High School. “For instance, there’s an agronomy team, a meat science team, livestock judging — a lot of different avenues for students. Even students who may not have an ag background can find something they enjoy.”

The program introduces students to industries that are especially important in Idaho, including forestry and natural resources. Through hands-on learning, students can explore potential career paths and decide if they want to pursue those interests further in college or the workforce.

“I think the program builds confidence, mostly,” Cummins said. “It really helps students get an idea of what those agriculture industries are and opportunities for employment. It steers students toward their interests.”

As forestry programs continue to grow, so does the need for specialized equipment and tools. The First Federal Foundation grant helped provide resources that were previously out of reach due to budget limitations.

“I was in need of some supplies for the forestry class as far as tools,” Cummins shared. “They’re pretty expensive, and we just don’t have the budget for that. The First Federal support meant a lot to our students as far as being able to have those tools that we need.”

The First Federal Foundation is proud to support programs that invest in education, workforce development, and the future of local communities across southern Idaho.

The First Federal Foundation Summer Grant Cycle is now officially open through June 30, 2026. Nonprofit organizations, schools, and community programs serving Idaho are encouraged to apply. To learn more about the First Federal Foundation and apply for a grant, bankfirstfed.com/foundation
