Idaho… just reading the name brings me thoughts of outdoor majesty, beauty, and recreation. In the latest reports, Idaho leads the nation in both outdoor recreational job growth and compensation growth, and is second in annual GDP growth. (ORR 2023 State Ranking Table)
Mountain biking is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to get outside, enjoy recreation, be with family and friends, and not to mention some physical activity as well. It is time well spent!
Our trails here in the Gem State rank among the best in the world. Right inside the Twin Falls canyon, near the iconic Perrine bridge, lies one of the city’s newer attractions: Auger Falls Heritage Park. This area offers hours of family-friendly fun, exciting trails, a pump track, jumps, and amazing photo opportunities. Another popular destination in the Magic Valley is Indian Springs Trails, located directly south of Kimberly. With its climbs, water crossings, and glimpses of local wildlife, it adds to the excitement and challenge.
Idaho’s ski resorts have also embraced summer trail use, developing impressive networks for mountain biking and hiking. Top picks include Bogus Basin, Grand Targhee, Sun Valley, and Brundage. Some of my other preferred areas are Eagle Bike Park, the Boise Military Reserve, and my absolute favorite — Galena Lodge north of Ketchum. I recommend using TrailForks.com to learn about popular trails and to find fun suggested routes.
Getting started is easiest by visiting one of our excellent local bike shops for advice or to get your bike tuned-up into top shape. Facebook Marketplace is a good way to shop for a pre-owned bike as well. Just know that those first few rides will include some dialing in of your gear and getting your body accustomed to the new activity. It is surprising how quickly it comes though, and it is worth it!
When it comes to supplies, a hydration hip pack is one of the most comfortable ways to carry essentials like a multi-tool, pump or CO2 cartridge, spare tube, food, and water. Keep your gear as light as possible though and invest in a good mountain biking helmet and gloves for safety. In Idaho, a must-have is a liquid tire sealant to guard against flats from thorns — refresh it a couple times a year for peace of mind.
No matter how you choose to enjoy Idaho’s stunning outdoors, let’s all do our part to keep the trails clean and be respectful, so we can all continue taking pride in calling this state our home!
